Growl Class (aka Reactive Dog)"Reactive Dog" class is designed to help rehabilitate dogs that are aggressive or reactive toward other dogs. Many dogs get tense around other dogs. Some dogs bark, growl, snap at or even attack other dogs. "Reactive Dog" class concentrates on helping reactive dogs relax around other dogs and helping owners know what to do when their dogs do react by growling, lunging or fighting around other dogs. While this is a difficult problem, it can often be solved. Our techniques are humane and scientifically sound. "Reactive Dog" class is a 6 week program. The first week is required and for people only. We will get to know one another, discuss our dog's problems, and learn the training tools and techniques we will be using during class. Your dog will be required to wear a Gentle Leader Head Collar each week at class. You may purchase one from us for $20.00. We may require the use of a muzzle during class periods depending on your dog's reaction to the other dogs, your ability to handle your dog and what activities your dog is participating in. Muzzles are available for purchase as well. Note: All dogs are unique, and they respond differently to this program. Some dogs graduate and are asked never to return to "reactive dog" class. These dogs often return to normal training classes. Other dogs are less prone to being reactive and are simply more manageable. Some dogs require multiple 6 week sessions to see significant improvements. We offer Level II classes for those dogs who need more practice after their initial session. One of the most important and predictable benefits you and your dog will get from this class is the skill you will gain in handling your dog. You will gain confidence as you learn to interpret your dog's behavior and see your dog become less stressed around other dogs over time. You will meet other people who don't freak out when your dog reacts but understand what it's like to deal with this problem. You'll gain support and encouragement from them. You will learn what motivates your dog to react and how to reduce it. And you will learn techniques for managing your dog when meeting other dogs to reduce the likelihood of reactions or fights, and to help your dog continue to improve his behavior. This class requires extensive instructor training, expertise, preparation and involvement. A typical class will have 2 instructors trained and experienced in dealing with reactive dogs and is limited to 4 dogs. For these reasons the cost of the class is $175 for 6 weeks. Due to the nature of the class we ask that children under the age of 12 stay home and that the handler always be over the age of 18. Growl Practice Sessions are one-time practice sessions where graduates of any Growl Class can gain more exposure to other dogs and owners can get more practice using the training techniques you learned in class. We will adjust each practice session for the skill level of the dogs attending. A Practice Session lasts one hour and costs $20. Reactive Dog Agility classes are available for dogs who have successfully completed a Level I Growl class or who can demonstrate equivalent skills.
