Competition Obedience

Competition obedience is a precise sport which shows the training and relationship of the dog and handler. You will learn how to teach your dog to heel both on and off leash with precision and enthusiasm; long sit, down, and stand-stays with distractions; coming when called over a jump; and holding a stand-stay while a stranger briefly pets/handles your dog. More advanced exercises where appropriate may include the drop on recall; various retrieving and scent discrimination games; various jumps; go out (sending the dog away from you across the room); and other obedience games.

Competitions are available through the AKC, ASCA, and CDSP. We will focus on CDSP, as the "The Companion Dog Sports Program supports St. Hubert's mission to provide a wide variety of programs that nurture the human/animal bond and foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities for ALL dogs, not just purebred dogs, to participate in a variety of dog sports and earn titles in an environment that promotes dog-friendly training methods and philosophies that enhance the human animal bond." We strongly support dog-friendly and inclusive show venues, however, students should also be able to compete in ASCA or AKC obedience using the skills we cover in class.

Students should have taken a Rally Obedience class prior to enrolling in Competition Obedience, since we will build on skills you learned in Rally.
