Puppy Kindergarten and Pet Obedience

Puppy Kindergarten and Pet Obedience class is where you and your dog should start.

Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies less than 16 weeks old on the first class meeting. Pet Obedience is for all dogs between the ages of 16 weeks and 16 years. beginning obedience and puppy kindergarten class

You will learn the basics of how dogs learn and how to teach them. If you want to find out more about the training method used in our classes, click here.

You will begin teaching your dog the following skills:

  • Pay Attention to you
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stand (optional)
  • Stay
  • Walk on a loose leash
  • Come when Called
  • Leave It!

As well as learning some basic husbandry skills such as:

  • Brushing (and how to get your dog used to it)
  • Tooth Brushing
  • Nail Clipping
  • Ear Cleaning
  • Bathing
  • Tips and tricks to make grooming pleasant for both of you

We will take time each week for questions and cover basic behavior issues like:

  • Housetraining
  • Barking
  • Jumping up on people
  • Polite greeting at the door
  • Digging
  • Stealing your stuff
  • Puppy nipping
  • Chasing the kids
  • Chewing
  • Crate training
  • Any other questions that you have

Your puppy or dog will have the opportunity to socialize with other dogs and people. You will learn to understand dog body language as well as being shown the difference between appropriate and inappropriate play and teaching you when and how to intervene if needed. You will get to practice important life skills such as calling your dog away from playing with his doggy friends and getting him to wait politely at the door instead of rushing out ahead of you.

Dog training is something that takes time and consistency, so you might want to consider continuing on with other classes until you have achieved the level of training that meets your needs.
